“The Aurality of History in the Transregional Context” is a forum discussion exploring the possibilities addressed to the muffled historical experiences. It is also a point of intersection formulated from inquiries toward ethics of aesthetics shared between two artistic practitioners—Suga Kenjiro, an essayist working in the field of translation, and Wang Hong-Kai, a visual artist practicing the domain of sound. The conversation will engage with forms of historical narratives in relation to the aural experience as a route of pedagogy for the oppressed, including both the living and the dead. With a focus on the poetics and the conceptualization of hearing, Suga will share his collaboration with Takayama Akira and their urban theater project Tokyo Heterotopia; Wang will elaborate upon her ongoing transregional workshops as an aim to rehabilitate the subaltern epistemology. “Give-on-and-with,” a phrase coined by Edouard Glissant in Poetics of Relation, is not only a refusal to translation as an epistemological subjugation but also a veto to generalization in any potential theorizations. The forum discussion attempts to resume the conversation inaugurated by Glissant through “give-on-and-with” in order to recognize the historiography of domination in our shared flux of contemporaneity.

Born in Huwei, Taiwan, Hong-Kai Wang is an artist, researcher and educator based in Vienna and Taipei. She is a PhD in Practice candidate at Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and a member of the History from Below Network.
