《聲線計畫》希望藉由採集樂音和口述歷史等方式來重新思考自殖民時代以降,跨國貿易和全球化所形塑的當代政治文化樣貌。台灣島的歷史記憶雖為創作的出發點,本計畫希望能以更複雜且多線性的方式來普查東亞地區的近代史,以反映不同區域間歷史進程的共時性和多樣的後現代特性。

章節〈史貝克斯的歌〉以荷蘭殖民時代訴訟案件所記錄的歷史人物莎爾帖.史貝克斯(Saartje Specx, 1617–1636)為主軸線,貫串日本、印尼和台灣的近代貿易史。莎爾帖為荷蘭貿易商和日本人的私生女。當時荷蘭東印度公司實行嚴謹的去蠻夷政策,這些混血私生子女被強制遣送至印尼巴達維亞(今雅加達)統一管理。在這裡,莎爾帖發生一起醜聞案件,致使她隨後跟從牧師前往台灣傳教。莎爾帖混雜的血緣與不能由己的遷移,如同一個島殖民史的微型,是當時千萬小人物命運的縮影。這樣的大背景下,混血女孩的故事,日本和台灣都有類似的紀錄,甚至以此入歌。《聲線計畫:史貝克斯的歌》由「歌」、「唱」、「廣播」三個部分組成,本計畫將傳唱民間的流行音樂視為個人口述史的音樂性詮釋,嘗試藉由聲音和樂曲等媒介,重新解構和比較這些女孩的故事與遷移路線,拼湊出一套另類的時間軸線與地圖座標。

《聲線計畫:史貝克斯的歌》為吳其育、沈森森、致穎合作的展演計畫,並參與2016台北雙年展。「唱」是一場約莫一小時的現場演說表演,而計畫其他部分將於台北市立美術館展出。

By virtue of oral history and musical sound collection, Sound Route aims to reflect on both the modality of contemporaneity and the political relations among different regions that have been shaped by transnational trade and globalization since the colonial period. The three artists treat the historical memory of Formosa as their point of departure.

Nevertheless, they expect the project to be a comprehensive, multi-thread survey on the early modern history of East Asia, thereby highlighting the synchronicity of the historical development of different areas and the diversity of post-modern qualities.

The work Songs of SPECX features Saartje Specx (1617–1636), a historical figure involved in litigation under the Dutch colonial rule, whose experiences serve as an axis on which the early modern history of trade among Japan, Indonesia and Taiwan spun. Saartje Specx was the natural daughter by a Dutch merchant and a Japanese woman. Following its strict policy of excluding foreigners, the Dutch East India Company forcibly deported these natural children to Batavia (now Jakarta), Indonesia where they were rounded up for control. While there, Saartje was embroiled in a major scandal which left her with no choice but to string along evangelical minister George Candidius to preach in Taiwan. Her mixed blood and forced migration not only represent the microcosm of the colonial history of an island, but also epitomize thousands upon thousands ciphers of her time controlled by the whims of a cruel fate.

Against that general background, records on cases similar to Saartje’s have been available in Japan and Taiwan where they have even been adapted for song lyrics. By construing pop music as musical interpretations of oral history and employing sounds and melodies as abstract media, Sound Route: Song of SPECX, which consists of three parts, “The Song”, “The Singing”, and “The Broadcast”, tries to deconstruct and compare the stories and migration routes of these ladies, thereby scraping together an alternative time axis and route map according to which the project chronicles the evolution of capitalism in early modern East Asia.
